Method

With a rich, creamy texture, a shaken cocktail like the whisky sour is a delicious balance of acidity punctuated with smoky notes from scotch whisky.  The classic cocktail is ideal to mix for amateur mixologists as well as perfect to serve along with canapés, at gatherings.

What you’ll need

Ingredients

Serves:
1
  • J&B Rare Blended Scotch Whisky (or any whisky of choice)
    30ml
  • Lemon juice
    15ml
  • Sugar syrup
    2ml
  • Egg white
    1
  • Ice cubes
    For shaking

Method

  1. Step 1

Measure the whisky, lemon juice, sugar syrup and egg white to add to a shaker.

  2. Step 2

Shake vigorously without ice to help the cocktail achieve a frothy top.

  3. Step 3

Once the ingredients are combined, add ice cubes and shake well for 15-20 seconds in a rapid motion before straining into a serving glass.

Tips & Suggestions

  • Dry shake the ingredients for the whisky sour before adding ice and shaking again, to achieve the perfect foamy top.

  • If shaking vigorously does not yield the desired foamy texture, use a nitrous canister to create the egg white foam for visual appeal.

FAQs

A whisky sour balances the taste of the spirit with the use of simple syrup and lemon juice whereas the latter highlights the bitter characteristics due to being spirit-forward, as well as using bitters and a sugar cube.

An egg white foam is added to the whisky sour cocktail to enhance its texture and mouthfeel, while also softening the edge of the drink.

A plant-based swap for the ingredient would be aquafaba or liquid derived from soaked chickpeas – which can be whipped using an electric mixer for 3-6 minutes for the foamy effect.
