  • White rum
    30ml
  • Orange curaçao
    15ml
  • Orgeat syrup
    10ml
  • Fresh lime juice
    10ml
  • Crushed ice
  • Mint sprig (garnish)
  • Lime wheel (garnish)

Equipment

  • 1 x Pahar Tiki
  • 1 x Gheață
  • 1 x Jigger
  • 1 x Shaker de cocktail
  • 1 x Strecurătoare pentru bar

Method

Step 1

To quickly chill and dilute, combine white rum, orange curaçao, orgeat syrup, and lime juice in an ice-filled cocktail shaker.

Step 2

To integrate flavours and chill the cocktail, shake it briskly for around 10 seconds.

Step 3

To preserve texture and coolness, strain the shaken mixture into a rocks glass filled with freshly broken ice.

Step 4

Garnish with a mint leaf and lime wheel to give aroma and visual appeal to the final presentation.

Tips & Suggestions

  • Use both dark and light rum to achieve depth—an aged rum works well for body, while a lighter rum provides balance.

  • Garnish with a lime shell that has been discarded and a fresh mint sprig to replicate the classic "island" look and release aromatic oils close to the nose of the drinker.

FAQs

The word "Mai Tai" translates to "the best" in Tahitian. It gained popularity in the 1950s and 1960s due to increased tourism in French Polynesia and the development of tiki culture.

Mai Tai cocktails are shaken, not stirred. The shaking helps to chill the drink and blends all of the components, including the orgeat syrup and lime juice.

A variety of rums, both lighter and darker, are excellent for Mai Tai cocktails, with a focus on Jamaican rums.
