Ingredients
Method

A perfectly balanced blend of zesty citrus flavours, paired with smoky whisky and blood orange soda, this contemporary take on a whisky highball is a great way to introduce a variety of citrus elements. Swap the orange juice for any other cold-pressed citrus juice of choice and allow the soda to provide texture and mouthfeel to the drink while tying flavours together cohesively.

What you’ll need

Ingredients

Serves:
1
  • Johnnie Walker Black Label (or any blended scotch whisky of choice)
    30ml
  • Fresh orange juice
    5ml
  • Blood orange soda
    60ml
  • Orange wedge
    For garnish
  • Ice cubes

Method

  1. Step 1

Pour the orange juice and scotch whisky into an ice-filled highball glass.

  2. Step 2

Top up with the blood orange soda and garnish with an orange wedge before serving.

Tips & Suggestions

  • To keep the fizz of blood orange soda intact, stir the whisky with orange juice for aeration and then top it with soda.

  • To add some sweetness to the drink and balance taste, honey or agave syrup can be added.

FAQs

The sweet and acidic orange juice cut through the complex flavour of whisky, depending on the smokiness, caramel, spicy and woody nature. The citrus oils basically enhance the aroma of whisky. The natural contrast of any scotch whisky and orange juice creates a harmony without overpowering each other.

When whisky and orange juice are mixed, the citrusy flavour of orange juice gets balanced with the smoky or smooth whisky, creating a well-balanced drink in terms of taste and texture.

The cocktail tastes juicy, tangy, and bitter from the blood orange soda, along with a slight sweetness from the orange juice. The smoky flavour of the whisky creates a perfect balance between all the flavours.
