Old Pal Cocktail

Whisky
Author: Smriti Dey
A red cocktail in a martini glass garnished with an orange twist sits on a dark countertop in a dimly lit bar or restaurant.
Ingredients
Method

Unlike similar drinks such as the Boulevardier, which has sweet hints, the Old Pal features a drier taste with restrained finish. The concoction has a spiced foundation that remains bright and brisk; simple in construction yet nuanced in flavour, the traditional ratio places emphasis on precision. The drink is commonly featured in classic cocktail menus due to its simplicity and ability to showcase balance using minimal ingredients.

What you’ll need

Ingredients

Serves:
1
  • Rye whisky
    15ml
  • Dry vermouth
    15ml
  • Bitter Italian liqueur
    15ml
  • Orange peel
    For garnish
  • Ice cubes

Method

  1. Step 1

Add the rye whisky, dry vermouth and Italian liqueur into a mixing glass filled with ice cubes.

  2. Step 2

Stir the mixture thoroughly until well chilled and properly diluted.

  3. Step 3

Strain into a chilled coupe glass and garnish with a twist of orange peel before serving.

Tips & Suggestions

  • Maintain ingredient temperature consistency by keeping all components at fridge temperature prior to mixing for optimal balance and flavour cohesion.

  • Swirl dry vermouth in the mixing glass, discard immediately and then proceed with the recipe. This process softens the rye’s potency and adds a light botanical base.

FAQs

The equal parts format ensures balance, where no single ingredient dominates the palate and provides a straightforward yet complex result that highlights each element clearly.

Substitutes can be used but it is crucial that they maintain similar bitterness and colour. However, replacing the ingredient will alter the potency, sweetness or citrus complexity of the cocktail.

Spiced or herbal vermouths can be used cautiously, but they may overshadow the rye and alter the drink’s dryness; a neutral dry vermouth preserves intended crispness.
