Lionheart

Gin
Author: Ashifa Bano
A glass of yellow cocktail with ice, garnished with a slice of orange on the rim, sits against a dark background.
Ingredients
Method

The Lionheart cocktail, made with gin, zesty lemon juice, and velvety blood orange purée, is full of personality. A touch of sugar syrup softens the edges, while a whisper of bitter liqueur enhances the flavour.  Shaken with egg white, it streams smoothly and majestically, topped with velvety foam.

What you’ll need

Ingredients

Serves:
1
  • Gin
    20ml
  • Bitter liqueur
    10ml
  • Blood orange purée
    15ml
  • Fresh lemon juice
    15ml
  • Sugar syrup
    10ml
  • Egg white
    15ml
  • Ice cubes

Method

  1. Step 1

Combine gin, bitter liqueur, blood orange purée, lemon juice, sugar syrup, and egg white in a shaker.  Shake without ice for 15 seconds to get a stable foam.

  2. Step 2

Add fresh ice to the shaker and shake briskly for an additional 10-12 seconds to cool the drink and improve its texture.

  3. Step 3

Double-strain the liquid into a chilled coupe or Nick & Nora glass to remove ice shards and achieve a velvety texture.

  4. Step 4

Allow the froth to settle for a few seconds before garnishing with a few drops of bitters or a blood orange zest twist for added visual appeal. Serve immediately.

Tips & Suggestions

  • Choose a high-quality blood orange purée with no added sugar for natural sweetness and a deep hue that characterises the Lionheart cocktail's distinctive appearance and balance.

  • Choose a botanical-forward gin to balance out the citrus and bitter flavours, increasing the drink's depth without dominating its fruity and smooth profile.

FAQs

Blood orange purée offers a deep citrus richness, providing sweetness and slight bitterness. Its brilliant colour and somewhat acidic, berry-like flavours add to the visual and flavour complexity of the Lionheart cocktail.

While gin is the usual ingredient in the Lionheart cocktail, vodka or a lighter bourbon can be used instead.

The Lionheart cocktail is a sweet and sour drink. It balances the sourness of lemon juice with the sweetness of simple syrup to produce a well-balanced flavour profile. The recipe also includes egg white, which gives the drink a velvety texture and mouthfeel.
