The salty dog cocktail boasts of a unique flavour profile, balancing the tartness of grapefruit with a savoury element like the salt rim. Created with minimal ingredients - typically gin or vodka, fresh grapefruit juice and a salted rim, it is usually served in a highball glass over ice, with the savoury rim providing distinctive taste that mellows the citrusy bite.

  • London dry gin
    30ml
  • Fresh grapefruit juice
    120ml
  • Salt
    For the rim
  • Grapefruit slice
    For garnish
  • Ice cubes

Method

  1. Step 1

    Pour the salt onto a saucer, moisten the rim of a chilled rocks or highball glass with a grapefruit slice or a damp towel before dipping it into the salt.

  2. Step 2

    In a mixing glass, combine the London dry gin and grapefruit juice.

  3. Step 3

    Fill with ice and stir vigorously for around 20-30 seconds until the mixture is completely chilled.

  4. Step 4

    Strain the drink into a prepared salt-rimmed glass filled with more ice, garnish with a grapefruit slice and serve.

Tips & Suggestions

  • For the rim, use coarse sea salt or fleur de sel to enable the best texture and a prominent salty flavour.

  • Consider using pink grapefruit juice as a slightly sweeter and more visually appealing alternative to white grapefruit juice.
