Method

The delicious blend of Vodka/Rum with muddled raspberries is fairly simple to mix and can be experimented with to suit preferences. If you love experimenting in your home bar, create your unique twist and make a drink to complement special occasions.

What you’ll need

Ingredients

Serves:
1
  • Light rum or vodka
    30ml
  • Orange juice
    45ml
  • Pineapple juice
    45ml
  • Soda water (to top)
    60ml
  • Ice cubes
  • Orange slice or mint sprig (optional garnish)

Method

  1. Step 1

Fill a highball glass with ice. Add the rum or vodka, then orange juice and pineapple juice.

  2. Step 2

Gently stir to combine without muddying the mixture.

  3. Step 3

Float soda water on top, add one light stir, garnish if desired, and serve.

Tips & Suggestions

  • Pre-chill the tall glass (Collins glass or highball) in the freezer to stabilise temperature and avoid initial dilution by ice.

  • Always pour soda or sparkling water from a low angle over an ice cube or down a spoon to prevent excess bubble loss.

FAQs

The most commonly accepted explanation leads to 19th-century trains, if a metal ball was hoisted by the signal post (a high ball), which served as the green light for a train. Perhaps something led to another, which meant a quick drink.

The best carbonated mixer for a Highball cocktail varies with the spirit; soda water is most traditional, but ginger ale, tonic, or flavoured sparkling water can work well with certain spirits.

The ones most commonly used in Highball cocktails include Scotch whisky, Japanese whisky, vodka, white rum, and gin. Each one of these works well mixed with soda water or lightly carbonated mixers.
