John G. Martin's Original Moscow Mule Cocktail Recipe

The Moscow Mule is more than just a cocktail - it’s a piece of drinks history. Created in the early 1940s by John G. Martin, a spirits executive determined to popularise vodka in the United States, the Moscow Mule was born from a clever partnership between Martin and bar owner Jack Morgan. By pairing Smirnoff vodka with fiery ginger beer and fresh lime, they created a drink that was bright, punchy and instantly approachable - and in doing so, helped spark America’s love affair with vodka.
Served traditionally in its iconic copper mug, the Moscow Mule isn’t just about flavour, it’s about theatre. The chilled metal keeps the drink icy cold, enhancing the crisp vodka base, the sharp citrus zing and the effervescent ginger spice that builds with every sip. Decades later, it remains a global classic - proof that simple ingredients, smart storytelling and a bit of entrepreneurial flair can change cocktail culture forever.
