Method

The classic margarita cocktail boasts a global presence, celebrated for its vibrant balance. Typically served in a dedicated margarita, a coupe or an old fashioned glass, legend traces its 1938 genesis to Mexican proprietor Carlos Herrera. The beverage can be served ‘up’, meaning without ice in the glass, or poured over fresh ice and a signature salt rim, applied to the outer edge of the glass.

What you’ll need

Ingredients

Serves:
1
  • Tequila
    20ml
  • Triple sec
    10ml
  • Fresh lime juice
    15ml
  • Salt
    For rim (optional)
  • Ice cubes

Method

  1. Step 1

If preferred, prepare a chilled margarita glass or coupe glass by moistening the rim with a lime wedge and dipping it in a shallow dish of salt.

  2. Step 2

In an ice-filled cocktail shaker, add the tequila, triple sec and fresh lime juice.

  3. Step 3

Secure the cover and shake rapidly for 15-20 seconds, or until the outside is completely frozen and the mixture sufficiently cooled.

  4. Step 4

Fine strain the colourful liquid into your prepared, empty glass and serve immediately.

Tips & Suggestions

  • Choose a 100% agave tequila blanco or reposado for the best flavour, as mixing tequila varieties can lead to a harsher drink.

  • For a slightly herbaceous note, consider adding a small sprig of cilantro to the shaker before straining.

FAQs

The salt rim, while optional, enriches the flavour of the cocktail by balancing its sweetness and tartness, as well as adding a complex layer to each sip.

To prepare a frozen version, instead of shaking and straining, combine the ingredients with a large amount of ice and blend until smooth; however, the ratios may require modest adjustments.

While it is feasible to skip the orange liqueur, it will not be a classic margarita without the addition of the ingredient. Instead, the cocktail would be a ‘tequila sour’ and would most likely need more simple syrup to balance.
