The Hot Toddy cocktail is an aromatic drink considered to be a winter classic, tastefully elevated by the simple combination of bourbon, honey and spices. A perennial favourite on holiday cocktail menus around the world, it has cemented its place as a seasonal staple in bars and restaurants. Often served in a heat-resistant mug or clear toddy glass that enables guests to enjoy its amber tone and steamy scent, the warm concoction is as versatile as it is delicious.

  • Bourbon
    30ml
  • Honey
    Teaspoon
  • Small cinnamon stick

  • Green cardamom pods (lightly crushed)

  • Whole cloves

  • Boiling water
    120ml
  • Lemon peel or wheel
    For garnish

Method

  1. Step 1

    Combine the bourbon, honey, cinnamon, cardamom pods and whole cloves in a heatproof cup or toddy mug.

  2. Step 2

    Carefully pour the boiling water over the contents and stir gently with a spoon until the honey is completely dissolved.

  3. Step 3

    Allow the spices to steep and release their fragrances into the warm mixture.

  4. Step 4

    Garnish the rim with a fresh lemon peel or wheel and serve immediately.

Tips & Suggestions

  • Consider adding a tiny slice of fresh ginger to the mug for an additional layer of flavour and a slightly spicy note.

  • To maximise flavour, lightly toast whole spices such as cinnamon sticks or cloves on a dry skillet before adding them to the drink.
