A refined drink that is often highlighted for its structure, clarity and modern botanical profile, the Laverstoke cocktail is frequently discussed in professional mixology for its clean composition, temperature control requirements as well as presentation. While not classified as a classic, it is commonly featured on contemporary cocktail menus due to its compatibility with batch preparation.

1
  • Tanqueray No 10 London dry gin (or any other gin of choice)
    15ml

    4ml
  • Ginger ale
    30ml

  • Thin slice fresh ginger root
    For garnish
  • Small mint sprig
    For garnish
  • Ice cubes

Method

  1. Step 1

Fill a highball glass with ice cubes.

  2. Step 2

Add the gin, elderflower liqueur and white vermouth directly over the ice.

  3. Step 3

Top up with ginger ale and stir gently to maintain the carbonation while blending flavours.

  4. Step 4

Garnish the drink with a lime wedge, a thin slice of fresh ginger root and a small sprig of mint before serving.

Tips & Suggestions

  • Layer the elderflower liqueur before adding the gin to allow its floral notes to settle at the base, releasing aromatics gradually as the drink is picked up and sipped.

  • Lightly press or score the ginger root slice prior to garnishing to release scents without masking the cocktail’s primary flavour structure.

FAQs

Yes, a gentle stir is advised after topping up with tonic to integrate flavours without losing carbonation.

A London dry gin is recommended for the cocktail since it offers a clean, classic botanical structure with pronounced juniper - allowing it to balance citrus, floral and spiced elements without masking other components. A well-structured gin also ensures consistency when carbonated mixers are added.

While optional, mint significantly enhances aromatic delivery. If omitted, the overall flavour will remain intact, but the cocktail’s fragrance will lack herbal notes.
