3 Ways To Margarita With Don Julio Tequila: Explore The World's Favourite Cocktail In New Ways

Introduction
What makes a margarita the world's favourite cocktail? Is it the classic status, the iconic flavour profile, or the fact that it's one of those rare drinks that can genuinely adapt to any occasion? It may not be the newest trend but the margarita cocktail has stood the test of time to become one of the standards of any good cocktail menu.
The classic margarita cocktail has been gracing cocktail menus since somewhere between the 1930s and 1950s, born somewhere along the US–Mexico border. Its exact origins have long been the subject of debate - various bartenders, socialites and restaurateurs have all staked their claim - and that mystery is, in many ways, part of its charm. What isn't a mystery is its enduring popularity. The margarita consistently ranks among the world's most ordered cocktails, decade after decade.

What Is A Margarita?
At its core, a margarita cocktail recipe is a three-ingredient cocktail: tequila, citrus (almost always fresh lime juice), and an orange liqueur. It's typically served either straight up in a chilled coupe or martini glass, or on the rocks in a short glass and almost always with a salted rim, though that part is entirely optional and very much a matter of personal preference. The beauty of the margarita lies in its balance. It's tart, slightly sweet, a cocktail that rewards good ingredients. Use a quality tequila and fresh lime juice, and you'll taste the difference immediately.
What Are The Ideal Ratios For A Margarita Cocktail?
The most widely accepted ratio for a classic margarita cocktail recipe is 2:1:1 - two parts tequila, one part orange liqueur, and one part fresh lime juice. This gives you a balanced drink, with the citrus and sweetness working to complement rather than mask the tequila.
Some bartenders prefer a slightly more generous lime pour (moving closer to a 2:1:1.5 ratio) for a sharper result. Others lean on the agave syrup or liqueur to soften the citrus and create a more approachable serve. The ratio you settle on will depend on your palate and the specific tequila you're using a blanco will give you something bright and crisp, while a reposado adds warmth and depth that can handle a slightly sweeter build.
The most important rule? Always use fresh lime juice. Bottled juice is a shortcut that significantly undermines the final drink.
3 Don Julio Tequila Margarita Cocktail Variations
Don Julio is one of Mexico's most celebrated tequila producers, founded by Don Julio González in the Highlands of Jalisco in 1942 and now a favourite of the Indian tequila market. Each expression is made from hand-selected, fully mature blue agave, making it an excellent base for any margarita recipe variation. Here are three ways to explore the cocktail with Don Julio at the centre.

1. Don Julio Los Altos Reposado Margarita
A subtle, refined serve - Don Julio Reposado, fresh lime and orange liqueur lifted with a splash of prosecco.
Don Julio Reposado is aged for eight months in American white-oak barrels, developing a smooth, slightly honeyed character with notes of vanilla and light wood. The addition of prosecco here turns a classic margarita cocktail into something a little more celebratory - effervescent and elegant without losing the tequila's presence.
Serves: 1
Ingredients
45 ml Don Julio Reposado
15 ml fresh lime juice
15 ml Cointreau
30 ml prosecco
2 lime wheels (garnish)
Equipment
1 highball glass
Ice scoop
Jigger
Tongs
Cocktail shaker
Hawthorne strainer
Method
Combine the Don Julio Reposado, lime juice and Cointreau in a cocktail shaker with ice.
Shake well to chill and dilute.
Strain into a highball glass filled with fresh ice.
Top with the prosecco, pour gently to preserve the bubbles.
Garnish with 2 lime wheels and serve immediately.

2. Spicy Don Julio Margarita Cocktail
Salty, tangy and subtly spicy - this serve offers a memorable twist on the original. A serrano-infused taco mix adds a distinctive finish.
This is a cocktail for those who like a little drama in their glass. The serrano pepper doesn't hit you immediately - it builds gradually and lingers in the aftertaste, balanced by the sweetness of pineapple and the freshness of herbs. It takes a little preparation, but the results are well worth it.
Ingredients
25 ml Don Julio Blanco Tequila
25 ml triple sec
50 ml taco mix* (see below)
25 ml fresh lime juice
1 pineapple triangle (garnish)
Method
Serrano Agave (Yield: approx. 200ml / 5 serves)
Finely chop 15g of serrano chilli, using the entire chilli.
Add the chilli, 50ml of water and 250ml of agave syrup to a small saucepan.
Heat gently for 25 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Remove from heat, strain out the solids, and allow to cool completely before use.
Taco Mix (Yield: approx. 300ml / 5 serves)
Combine 250ml of pineapple juice, 25g fresh coriander, 15g fresh mint, 15g fresh basil, and 150ml of the serrano agave in a blender.
Blend until smooth.
Fine strain through a sieve or cheesecloth into a clean bottle. Store refrigerated for up to 3 days.
Spicy Margarita
Add all measured ingredients to a cocktail shaker.
Fill with ice and shake hard for 10–12 seconds.
Strain into a rimmed old-fashioned glass over fresh ice.
Garnish with a pineapple triangle and serve.
Bartender's note: For the rim, a blend of flaky sea salt and a pinch of chilli powder works beautifully with this serve.

3. Classic Don Julio Margarita Cocktail Recipe
The margarita in its purest, most iconic form. Nothing to hide, everything to appreciate.
If there's one tequila cocktail that needs no introduction, it's this one. The classic margarita recipe is the benchmark against which all other variations are measured, and when made properly, it's difficult to improve upon. Don Julio Blanco, with its clean, bright agave character and hints of citrus and pepper, is an ideal choice here. It lets the cocktail's architecture shine.
Serves: 1
Ingredients
50 ml Don Julio Blanco
25 ml orange liqueur
25 ml fresh lime juice
1 lime wedge or wheel (garnish)
Equipment
1 martini or coupe glass (salt rim, half salt rim, or clear — according to preference)
Cocktail shaker
Fine strainer
Method
Prepare your glass: run a lime wedge around the rim and dip into a shallow plate of flaky sea salt — fully, half, or not at all depending on preference.
Add the Don Julio Blanco, triple sec and fresh lime juice to a cocktail shaker filled with ice.
Shake hard for 10–12 seconds to mix, chill and dilute.
Fine strain into the prepared glass.
Garnish with a lime wedge or wheel and serve.
Bartender's note: The shake matters here. A vigorous shake for a full 10–12 seconds ensures the drink is properly chilled and diluted — both essential to the final flavour.

FAQs:
The best tequila for a margarita is a 100% blue agave tequila - and beyond that, it comes down to the style of drink you want. A blanco (also called silver) such as Don Julio Blanco tequila gives you something clean, bright and citrus-forward, making it the go-to choice for a classic or spicy margarita. A reposado, which has been aged in oak barrels, brings warmth and depth, notes of vanilla, caramel and light spice and works particularly well in builds that include sparkling wine or more complex mixers.
