The Woo Woo is a fruity cocktail that’s all about bright flavours. Made with vodka, Peach Schnapps and cranberry juice, it delivers a juicy mix of sweetness and tartness with a smooth, fresh finish. Its vibrant colour and simple 3-ingredient recipe make it easy to mix for all types of occasions, from relaxed evenings to themed parties.

Woo Woo cocktail, from the era of peach schnapps and strange names

The Woo Woo cocktail is one of the many drinks from the 1980s that incorporated the Peach Schnapps (newly popular at the time) into the ingredient list for a fruitier take on the classics. This one, in particular, took on the Cape Codder cocktail. The codder only mixed vodka and cranberry juice; the Woo Woo cocktail added Schnapps to the mix.

Old magazine articles and historical data show that the 1980s were the time when flavour, and not the spirit, dominated the bar menus. Vodka, with its neutral base, became an easy ingredient to mix with different flavours and thus cocktails like the bright pink coloured Woo Woo were born. And why the name? While there is no confirmed reason, experts often credit the name to the sound that patrons make after consuming a drink. The accuracy of the claim can’t be verified, but it seems like a reasonable explanation, indeed.

Because of its short and simple ingredient list, the Woo Woo cocktail is also highly customisable. Swap the vodka with sparkling wine for a lighter, fizzier result, or top the drink with ginger ale to dilute the overall sweetness. For extra texture and fruity depth, muddle fruits into the shaker before adding other ingredients. Both strawberries and berries work well here. And for the simplest customisation, just experiment with garnishes!

How to make a Woo Woo cocktail and food pairing

The fruity, sweet, and tart profile of a Woo Woo cocktail pairs best with dishes that balance or elevate its sweetness. It beautifully complements spicy foods, creamy cheeses, and fresh seafood, offering an immediate contrast to these dishes. If you’re using the cocktail to start the evening, then a charcuterie and baked brie board could be a good choice. Salty cured meats (like prosciutto) or baked brie topped with nuts will cut through the sweetness of the drink. For something a little more spicy, try the Cajun chicken. Or even the spicy shrimp! However, if you’re planning a brunch or early evening party, go for fresh and light seafood like ceviche or lightly seasoned, pan-seared scallops. Crisp light salads or appetisers, like the lettuce wraps, also pair well with the drink. Go for options that can be prepped ahead and are easy to scale, especially when planning for a large gathering.
