The base spirit (rum) plays a defining role in the structure of the espresso rumtini cocktail. While other elements provide a backdrop, it is the selection of rum that impacts the drink’s body and character. Adding complexity, complementing bitterness with subtle layers, the rum base gives the concoction a layered profile, ideal for evening menus or dessert pairings.

What you’ll need

Ingredients

Serves:
1
  • Dark rum
    20ml
  • Fresh espresso
    15ml
  • Coffee liqueur
    7ml
  • Sugar syrup
    7ml
  • Coffee beans
    For garnish
  • Ice cubes

Method

  1. Step 1

Combine the dark rum, espresso, coffee liqueur and sugar syrup in an ice-filled cocktail shaker.

  2. Step 2

Shake vigorously until the mixture is well chilled and a smooth foam forms on top.

  3. Step 3

Strain into a chilled martini cocktail glass using a fine mesh strainer.

  4. Step 4

Garnish with three coffee beans placed gently on the surface and serve.

Tips & Suggestions

  • Add a small pinch of sea salt to the shaker before mixing, to balance the bitterness without changing the overall flavour.

  • Rinse the martini cocktail glass with a few drops of spiced rum before pouring in the drink, to add a subtle aromatic layer.

FAQs

Yes, but exclusing the syrup may result in a bitter drink. If omitting syrup, adjust the coffee liqueur quantity slightly to maintain balance of flavour.

Shake vigorously for at least 15 seconds with plenty of ice; using fresh, high-pressure espresso helps create a denser crema.

Flavoured rums can be used but choose subtle profiles like vanilla, which complement coffee flavours without masking them; avoid overly sweet or tropical variants.
