Shirley Temple mocktails have been a popular drink in the American pop culture. The drink is served in numerous restaurants, pubs, and parties. The drink is a testament to the enduring popularity of Shirley Temple, who remains a beloved figure in American history.   

Shirley Temple who died on February 10, 2014, carried on an incredible legacy not only in movies in which she starred as a young actress and the places where she later served as the U.S. ambassador, but also at bars and restaurants all across the world. The presence of the iconic young star is still felt today because of the Shirley Temple drink that has been named behind her to pay her tribute.   

There has been an interesting history behind the naming of the drink. The story narrates that the star was with her parents at a restaurant and needed something non-alcoholic to drink. She was ‘whining’ over her parents sipping Old Fashioned with which comes offshoot’s signature maraschino cherry as a garnish. The waitstaff mixed up a teetotal version for her made with a mix of ginger ale, grenadine syrup, and a maraschino cherry.   

Some reports say that the drink was first mixed at the Hollywood eatery Chasen’s, while others say it was the Brown Derby Restaurant also in Hollywood. Besides, the Royal Hawaiian Hotel has also said that their bartenders came up with this cocktail.   

Throughout the years, there have been a lot of variations of Shirley Temple cocktail has been made. In this article, we’ll take a look at some of them:

Shirley Temple Black   

This sophisticated version of the classic Shirley Temple mocktail combines the rich flavours of cola or black cherry soda with the signature grenadine syrup, resulting in a darker, more robust beverage. The deep hues create an alluring visual appeal, and the sweet, fruity notes from the grenadine perfectly complement the cola undertones. Garnished with a maraschino cherry, the Shirley Temple Black offers a nostalgic yet refined alternative for those who appreciate a more complex and mature flavour profile in their non-alcoholic drinks.   

Shirley Temple Blue   

The Shirley Temple Blue, a spin on the classic mocktail, introduces a vibrant and whimsical twist to the iconic beverage. By infusing lemon-lime soda with the sweet essence of blue raspberry syrup, this drink not only captivates the eyes with its enchanting azure hue but also tantalizes the taste buds with a delightful combination of citrusy and berry flavours. The addition of grenadine syrup provides a touch of sweetness, while the maraschino cherry crowning the drink adds a visually appealing finishing touch.

Tropical Temple   

This mocktail features a harmonious blend of pineapple juice and coconut water, infusing the drink with a tropical essence. The addition of grenadine syrup not only imparts a delightful sweetness but also creates a visually stunning layered effect reminiscent of a vibrant sunset. Garnished with a maraschino cherry, the Tropical Temple embodies the spirit of a beachfront escape, offering a perfect balance of fruity and coconut flavours that make it an ideal beverage for warm weather.   

Citrus Twist Shirley   

The Citrus Twist Shirley presents a zesty and invigorating variation on the classic Shirley Temple, infusing a citrusy freshness to the beloved mocktail. This lively concoction combines lemon-lime soda with the vibrant tang of orange and lime juices, creating a dynamic fusion of citrus flavours that dance on the palate. The addition of grenadine syrup imparts a hint of sweetness, balancing the tartness of the citrus elements. With a finishing touch of maraschino cherry, the Citrus Twist Shirley not only revitalizes the taste buds but also offers a visually appealing drink that showcases the bright and sunny essence of citrus fruits.
