Beyond The Rocks: A Journey Through Whisky Experiments With Johnnie Walker Black Label In Bengaluru

Introduction
In India, whisky and cocktails are having a moment in the spotlight. The spirit, once traditionally the preserve of long evenings, soda water, and a certain reverence for the neat pour is undergoing a new wave of bartenders and brand experiences is quietly dismantling that orthodoxy. Through Whisky Experiments, a three-bar experience through Bengaluru’s hotspots conceived around Johnnie Walker Black Label, set out to prove that a premium Scotch blended whisky is far more versatile than you may have thought.
The format was simple but clever: three bars, three distinct flavour themes, and three very different interpretations of what Johnnie Walker Black Label can become it’s about flavours, imagination and experimentation behind the counter. “Whisky is shedding its reputation as an old-fashioned staple. Our goal with this event is to show that a premium spirit like Johnnie Walker Black Label isn't just for sipping neat - it’s an incredibly sophisticated cocktail base,” says Riddhi Paul, the host for the evening. “Whether the profile is smokey, fruity, or even hints of coffee, these cocktails offer a smoothness that really surprises people. By bringing this experience to the bars our audience loves and working with very talented bartenders, we’re making whiskey culture accessible and exciting for a new era of drinkers.”
With that in mind, we ventured forth into our first sips.

Bar Spirit Forward | Aomori Orchard
Theme: Fresh
At Bar Spirit Forward the focus was on brightness. The Aomori Orchard was a standout infusion featuring a ginger-honey pairing that worked harmoniously with the spirit. The clarity of flavours was palpable, and each ip bridged the gap for those who usually shy away from whisky’s natural intensity. While it succeeded in being incredibly smooth, Johnnie Walker Black Label purists might find the spirit a bit too subdued. The bold green apple profile and a touch more of that classic whisky bite would bring people back for another sip..

Muro | Strictly Caffeinated
Theme: Coffee
Muro took a sophisticated turn with their "Strictly Caffeinated" concept. This was a masterclass in aromatic layering. The bitterness of the coffee didn't compete with the whisky; instead, it blended seamlessly, with a surprising citrus top note that tied the flavours together. Rather than masking the spirit, the coffee served to elevate and complement the smoky undertones of the Johnnie Walker Black Label, creating a drink that was as fragrant as it was bold.

Dali and Gala | 1986 Remix & XL Banana
Theme: Fruity
The third stop, Dali and Gala offered a two-pronged exploration of spice and fruit. First up was The 1986 Remix. This felt almost like a "Whisky Picante,” the combination of whisky and heat is a classic, but the tangy kick of jalapeño made this version stand out. It’s a daring, spicy profile, though a lighter salt rim would let the jalapeño's nuances shine more clearly.
XL Banana: For those who prefer the sweeter side of the spectrum, this was a revelation. It offered the distinct aroma of banana without an overpowering sugary taste. By leaning into the sweetness and using mashed banana to create a clarified drink, the bartenders softened the whisky's smoky, bitter notes, making it an ideal entry point for the "whisky-curious" crowd.

Across three stops and five cocktails, Johnnie Walker Black Label proved genuinely adaptable - capable of sitting beside ginger and honey, threading through coffee bitterness, sparring with jalapeño heat, and yielding, somewhat charmingly, to a clarified banana. The evening was designed to open a door, and on that count it succeeded. For a generation of drinkers who have grown up with craft cocktails and adventurous menus, there is now a persuasive case that whisky belongs in that conversation - not only as a concession to tradition, but as an invitation to explore it differently.
