Ingredients
Method

The Martinez 2 cocktail - widely regarded as the original precursor to the martini cocktail, is a complex and aromatic drink methodically mixed with ice until frozen and strained ‘up’. Typically garnished with an orange twist or lemon peel, the drink provides a beautifully balanced, spirit-forward sip that is both elegant and easy.

What you’ll need

Ingredients

Serves:
1
  • Tanqueray No 10 gin (or any other gin of choice)
    20ml
  • Sweet vermouth
    7ml
  • Maraschino liqueur
    3ml
  • Aromatic bitters
    1ml
  • Ice cubes
    For stirring
  • Orange peel
    For garnish

Method

  1. Step 1

Place your coupe or martini cocktail glass in the freezer or fill with ice water before discarding.

  2. Step 2

In a mixing glass, add the gin, sweet vermouth, maraschino liqueur and aromatic bitters.

  3. Step 3

Add plenty of fresh ice to the mixing glass and stir carefully for 20-30 seconds until the mixture is completely cold and diluted.

  4. Step 4

Strain into the chilled serving glass, pour the oils from an orange peel over the drink for aroma and add it as a garnish.

Tips & Suggestions

  • Instead of just a few drops, pour aromatic bitters into an atomiser. Once the drink has been strained, spray a single, fine mist over the surface to create an evenly distributed aromatic coating.

  • Before twisting the orange peel, gently warm it up between your palms or over a lighter flame for 2-3 seconds to enhance natural oil release, resulting in a more potent aromatic expression.

FAQs

The Martinez cocktail precedes the discovery of the martini cocktail and is made with a combination of sweet vermouth and maraschino liqueur, which provides a richer, sweeter flavour profile.

Using a high-quality Italian sweet vermouth is ideal. Look for expressions that are rich, complex and fruity enough to stand up to the gin while also balancing the maraschino liqueur’s profile.

A negroni combines gin, sweet vermouth and bitter orange liqueur to produce a distinct bittersweet flavour whereas the Martinez combines gin, sweet vermouth and maraschino for a sweeter, more aromatic flavour profile.
