Ramen And Cocktail Pairings: Crafting The Perfect For Korean-Themed Menu

A well-liked quick noodle dish, Korean ramen is distinguished by its robust, savoury, and spicy flavour. Typically, the broth has layers of umami, a hint of garlic, sesame, and soy, and a mild spice from gochujang (Korean red pepper flakes). It has a distinct slurp and a chewy, springy structure that retains the soup without making the noodles dry.

Noodles are traditionally made by boiling them in water, adding the spice packet, and then simmering them until they are tender but not soggy. As it simmers, the broth gains flavour, making for a well-rounded menu meal.

Additions such as shredded chicken, finely sliced cooked meat, or seafood can be stirred during the final minute of cooking to improve Korean ramen. Traditional garnishes include toasted sesame seeds, nori sheets, scallions, and soft-boiled eggs. Get to know how to pair ramen, Korean appetisers, and a variety of side dishes and cocktails for a Korean-themed menu.

5 Tips On Ramen And Cocktail Pairings For Korean-Themed Menu

Add Variety Of Kimchi On The Side

The spicy and acidic flavours of kimchi naturally enhance the savoury, broth-heavy Korean ramen. Kimchi balances the dish with a sourness and adds crunch to contrast with the soft noodles. With a fermented undertone that mimics the ramen's spice, the layered spice in kimchi adds new flavours. Various kimchi varieties—cucumber, radish, and cabbage—all contribute texture and contrast. Additionally, recipients can customise their spice with these side dishes.

Add Korean Fast Foods To The Menu

Ramen menu pairing can add an extra layer of layered textures and complimentary flavours from Korean fast food such as Korean fried chicken, mandu (dumplings), and tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes). The chewy rice cakes from Tteokbokki have a sweet-spicy coating that adds sticky richness. In contrast to the soft noodles, mandu adds new textures and savoury contents. Korean fried chicken increases the umami factor with its sweet soy or spicy coatings and crackling crunch.

Provide Multiple Topping Options

Cheese makes ramen velvety by tempering the spice and adding creaminess. The golden yolk of soft-boiled eggs adds richness to the broth by enhancing umami. To counterbalance heaviness, scallions provide a crisp, green brightness. With their subtle crunch, enoki mushrooms add an unexpected texture as well. Additional garnishes, such as toasted seaweed or pickled anchovies, provide more taste and contrast.

Traditional Sweet For Desserts On The Side

Traditional sweets like mochi and hotteok (stuffed sweet pancakes) can also be added to lower the spice levels while serving the pairings. Mochi's chewy texture and sweetness assist in balancing out the spice from noodles that are high in broth. With its crunchy shell and cinnamon-sugar filling, hotteok complements the umami of the ramen. Honey-soaked rice cakes or sweet red bean desserts are mild on the flavour as well.

Korean-Inspired Cocktails For Fushion

Korean-inspired drinks bring out the savoury and spicy flavours of ramen when served in the combo. Make a Yuja-Soju Highball first by combining 15 ml of soju and 15 ml of Korean citron syrup. Then, pour 20 ml of chilled sparkling water over it and add a thin wheel of lemon as a garnish. The rich broth of the ramen is balanced by the tart-sweet citrus aromas of yuja.

The green grape soju fizz comes next; it's made with 15 ml of soju and 15 ml of Korean green grape syrup, which is frequently used in Korean desserts and cocktails. It's then topped with 20 ml of soda and garnished with fresh mint.

Last but not least, the ginger-baekseolgi cooler combines 15 ml of soju, 15 ml of ginger syrup, and 5 ml of baekseolgi rice cake water before being topped with 30 ml of soda and ornamented with a basil sprig. The subtle sweetness of the rice and the tanginess from the spice of ginger bring in new layers to Korean food when combined as a pairing. Serve all three in tall, slender glasses to maintain their fizziness and lightness, providing a presentation and well-balanced taste.

Each pairing helps balance the spicy flavours of ramen with a little tang and texture. It adds variety to every combo, introducing new flavours. Ramen is one of the easiest dishes to serve because you don’t need to prepare too many different items. Just add a few simple sides and drinks without any extra hassle in the kitchen to serve a standard pairing.
