Want to try out an after meal, creamy and smooth drink with dessert-like notes? Baileys Original Irish Cream Liqueur is an excellent alternative for such moments. With a bottle that signifies heritage and a flavour that spells provenance, Baileys is ideal for adding to ice creams or coffee. Cocktail expert Afzal Kaba reviews the original Baileys Irish Cream Liqueur, its price points and its flavours to unravel the profile of this drink.

Flavour And Aroma

The starkly rich aroma of Baileys and its prominent whisky presence have made this sweet and caramel-like drink stand out as an interesting post dinner accompaniment with desserts.

Nose:

Initially, Kaba notes, Baileys smells like a dessert, yet it has perceptible aromas of coffee, chocolate and vanilla. The smell of melted chocolate mingles with the fragrance of vanilla beans to produce layered aromatic notes.

Taste:

Baileys Irish Cream carries the taste of coffee and vanilla, making it an interesting addition to freshly brewed coffees. Kaba recommends this as one of the dessert options while on a coffee date.

The liqueur has a smooth and luxurious finish, almost like a milkshake with prolonged notes of whisky, vanilla and cocoa powder.

Packaging And Design

A bottle of Baileys is darkly coloured so it blocks sunlight and keeps the liquid inside protected from warmer temperatures. A rounded, oval bottle of Baileys carries the label of the liqueur which signifies its heritage – dairy and distillation. As well, it also resembles the provenance of the brand. A 750 ml bottle of Baileys has an ABV of about 17% internationally, which may sometimes differ from region to region.

Brand Legacy

The history of this creamy liqueur goes back to 1973 when it was first crafted in Ireland as a way to bring together two Irish elements – whisky and cream – in a completely new product. Baileys was born out of such a blend of double cream, Irish whiskey, cocoa and vanilla.

It is the triple distilled Irish whisky incorporated in a classic Baileys that gives the drink its smooth yet prominent liquor flavours whereas the vanilla and cocoa add depth and sweetness. Moreover, the dairy that is used to prepare Baileys is sourced from Irish farmers and used fresh within a day or two, without letting it sit on the shelf.

Price Range

A 750 ml bottle of Baileys may cost between Rs. 2000 to Rs. 3000 depending on the market and availability. It can be bought and served as an after meal drink on a bed of ice post dinner or it can be added to coffee to infuse it with creamy, vanilla-like nuance.

Baileys Original Irish Cream Liqueur: Servings And Cocktails

Numerous flavour combinations complete with creamy ingredients and caramel-like flavours go well with Baileys. It can be added to iced coffees for infusing them with notes of whisky and the smooth textures of double cream. It can also be used to prepare a classic espresso martini cocktail or even a mudslide cocktail.

Here’s a simple recipe to craft a mudslide cocktail using Baileys:

Ingredients:

30 ml Baileys Original Irish Cream Liqueur

20 ml Ciroc Ultra Premium Vodka or any other premium vodka of choice

20 ml coffee liqueur

Method:

– Bring together 30 ml Baileys Original Irish Cream Liqueur 20 ml Ciroc Ultra Premium Vodka or any other premium vodka of choice and 20 ml coffee liqueur and shake well. Serve in a coupé glass over a bed of ice.

Finally, it is the creamy and luxurious taste of Baileys that makes it stand out as one of the finest creamy liqueurs, as versatile as it is texturally smooth. Inevitably, Baileys remains a mixologist’s recommendation for anyone interested in building milkshake-like, dense cocktails.
