Tequila - forget what you thought you knew
Forget 'shots, shots, shots' and grimacing at a bitter shot. Tequila has evolved.
Now one of the fastest-growing luxury spirits, tequila has become a drink to enjoy, not endure. From Casamigos' emphasis on bringing people together for sophisticated moments worth savouring to the world-class taste of Don Julio, let's serve up a lesson in all things tequila...
What is tequila?
Tequila is a distilled spirit made from the blue agave—a native plant to Mexico that looks like a cactus. It can grow to seven feet tall and take 5 to 7 years to fully mature.
Tequila can only be produced in 181 municipalities located in Jalisco, Nayarit, Michoacán, Guanajuato & Tamaulipas.
Mexican law states that tequila can come from any region under the Appellation of Origin for Tequila—it must be bottled between 35 and 55% ABV.
Tequila falls into two categories: tequila and 100% agave. Tequila makes up for most of the tequila sold around the world—it must be made from a minimum of 51% sugars coming from the blue agave. Whereas 100% agave is made only from sugars of the blue agave. 100% agave tequilas must be bottled in the place of origin.
Tequila Q&A - answers to the most commonly asked questions
Look, there's no such thing as a dumb question. If not knowing the answers to these common tequila questions is what's been holding you back, let us help.
What does tequila taste like?
Each tequila is slightly different, but generally speaking, tequila has a unique smooth, sweet and earthy flavour. Barrel ageing tequila will give the spirit an oaky, vanilla sort of flavour. Blanco tequilas tend to offer the purest tequila taste, with a semi-sweet, distinctive flavour.
Is tequila the same as Mezcal?
No - although mezcal is similar to tequila, as it's made from an agave plant, it's not the same as tequila. It can be made from many species of agave plant not just the blue agave like tequila is.
