Zorbatini Cocktail

Vodka
Author: Yash Lakhan

Ingredients
Method

The zorbatini cocktail is an assertive drink distinguished by the anise flavour of its main component, Ouzo - a dry anise-flavoured liquor that is extensively consumed in Greece and Cyprus. Essentially one-of-a-kind, the concoction is a culturally influenced take on the standard vodka martini cocktail. Given its spirit composition, it is typically stirred to ensure a chilled temperature and adequate dilution without aeration.

What you’ll need

Ingredients

Serves:
1
  • Vodka
    30ml
  • Ouzo
    15ml
  • Ice cubes (for stirring)
    Cup
  • Lemon peel twist
    For garnish

Method

  1. Step 1

Set aside a thoroughly chilled martini cocktail or coupe glass while you prepare a lemon twist for garnish.

  2. Step 2

In a separate mixing glass, combine the vodka and ouzo followed by ice cubes.

  3. Step 3

Stir the drink briskly with a bar spoon for 20-30 seconds or until it is chilled and fully diluted.

  4. Step 4

Strain the drink from the mixing glass into the serving glass, garnish with the lemon twist and serve immediately.

Tips & Suggestions

  • Before adding liquids, briefly muddle 2-3 whole anise seeds in the bottom of the mixing glass. Strain them before serving to get an underlying anise flavour.

  • Instead of a lemon twist, gently float a fresh basil leaf (such as Thai basil) for a hint of anise on the surface to provide subtle herbal aroma.

FAQs

Ouzo, made locally in the traditional Greek way, has an assertive anise flavour and is increasingly being utilised in mixed drinks due to its distinct profile.

Greek ouzo is typically created by distilling alcohol and using anise as the major flavouring agent. Other herbs such as fennel, coriander or mastic may be used to provide a distinctive liquorice flavour.

Because of its high alcohol content, ouzo does not ‘go bad’ the way food does. However, its bright anise flavour and aroma may fade with time, particularly if exposed to air and light once opened.
