Method

The blood orange & chocolate cocktail perfectly exemplifies the classic dessert combination of orange and chocolate. A sophisticated dessert-like drink served chilled in a martini cocktail or coupe glass, its deep hues and intricate profile make it a fabulous choice, ideal for a special occasion or an after-dinner drink.

What you’ll need

Ingredients

Serves:
1
  • vodka
    20ml
  • White crème de cacao
    10ml
  • Fresh orange juice
    30ml
  • Blood orange puree
    30ml
  • Pure crane syrup (adjust to taste)
    5ml
  • Ice cubes
    For shaking
  • Orange wheel
    For garnish

Method

  1. Step 1

To thoroughly chill a martini cocktail glass or coupe glass, place it in the freezer.

  2. Step 2

In a cocktail shaker, mix together the vodka, white crème de cacao, orange juice, blood orange puree and cane syrup.

  3. Step 3

Add ice cubes into the shaker, secure the top and vigorously shake for 15-20 seconds until the surface is well cooled and frosted.

  4. Step 4

Strain the mixture into a chilled glass, garnish with an orange wheel and serve immediately.

Tips & Suggestions

  • Before placing the orange wheel, gently flame it with a kitchen torch or lighter (briefly and away from the drink) to caramelise the sugars, releasing more fragrant oils and creating a dramatic impact.

  • After straining, finely grate a little amount of high-quality dark chocolate straight onto the drink’s surface, as the delicate scent heightens the crème de cacao's presence.

FAQs

The key distinction is colour; brown crème de cacao incorporates caramel colouring, resulting in a deeper tint, whilst white crème de cacao is translucent. Their flavour profiles are extremely similar, with both featuring sweet chocolate overtones.

Crème de cacao is an alcoholic liqueur - a sweet, chocolate-flavoured spirit that normally contains 20-25% alcohol by volume and used in a variety of dessert drinks and culinary applications.

Cane syrup is prepared entirely from sugarcane juice and typically has a deeper, molasses-like flavour. Simple syrup is often made of sugar (cane, beetroot or corn) mixed with water, which provides a neutral sweetness.
