Blackberry Whisky
Ingredients
Method

The blackberry whisky cocktail is a fruity spin packed with the rich taste of seasonal berries, making it a great sipper throughout the summer months, or as a bright alternative to heavier whisky drinks. Best served chilled at brunch or dusk events, its visual and aromatic appeal is further elevated when topped with fresh blackberries or a lemon slice.

What you’ll need

Ingredients

Serves:
1
  • Blended scotch whisky
    30ml
  • Blackberry syrup
    15ml
  • Fresh lemon juice
    20ml
  • Fresh blackberries
    2
  • Ice cubes, for shaking
    Cup

Equipment

  • 1 x Rocks Glass
  • 1 x Muddler
  • 1 x Shaker
  • 1 x Jigger

Method

Step 1

Thoroughly cool a rocks glass or coupe by placing it in the freezer.

Step 2

Using a cocktail shaker, gently muddle 3-4 fresh blackberries; pour in the scotch whisky, blackberry syrup and fresh lemon juice along with ice cubes.

Step 3

Secure the top and vigorously shake for 15-20 seconds until the surface is well-cooled and frosted.

Step 4

Double-strain the ingredients into a cold glass, garnish with some fresh blackberries and serve immediately.

Tips & Suggestions

  • When muddling blackberries, use a moderate push-and-twist action rather than smashing them since this technique extracts juice and flavour without releasing excessive skin or seed fragments.

  • For added scent and visual appeal, garnish with not only fresh blackberries but also an expressed lemon peel. The citrus oils add a necessary bright top note that complements the fruit.

FAQs

To make blackberry whisky, blend fresh or frozen blackberries with your preferred whisky in a well secured jar. Allow it to infuse for 3-7 days, tasting frequently; strain the fruit to make homemade blackberry whisky.

Blackberries combine well with a variety of alcohol, including whisky (bourbon or scotch), gin, vodka and rum. Blackberry liqueurs and brandies are also popularly used in mixology.

Many fruits complement whisky, particularly berries (blackberries, raspberries, strawberries), apples, pears, oranges and lemons. Dried fruits such as figs and dates help enhance the subtle aromas of the spirit.
