With Home Cafes, GenZ Is Brewing Its Own Aesthetic, Here’s Why

What has become a new, rather chic trend among the GenZ crowd is an interesting take on the whole experience of walking into a cafe to get a cup of joe. GenZ is in fact preferring brewing their own coffee by stepping into their own kitchens to craft an experience which spells intentional slow living, a budget-friendly experience and of course, a very curated, personalised aesthetic.

That’s what home cafes are all about – a specially orchestrated event involving lots of creative self-expression, an aesthetic representation of personal style and the inevitable Instagrammable pictures which are bound to arise from this exercise.

Here’s a note on the trending culture of home cafes and why it is making an impact along with how one goes about setting such a space right at home:

Affordable Luxury

One of the most basic characteristics of home cafes is the room they create for luxury. With a cafe-like aesthetic curated at home, GenZ prefers to invest in tools like a handy frother, a good-looking ceramic mug, reusable glass tumblers, coffee art apparatus, cold brews, DIY syrups and so much more, which can be put to use every day to brew drinks instead of paying ostentatious amounts at the trendiest cafes in town. This move is all about introducing craftsmanship to cost saving.

Aesthetically, it also involves making coffees and teas look good with the help of decoration equipment and sometimes one can also go the extra mile and turn a spot at the window or out on the terrace into a small place to have a warm drink while watching the sun rise.

Customisation As Canvas

For this generation, home cafes make room for customisation which enables them to explore their own range as a barista. Instead of going for a simple caramel latte, they can add to it a bit of lavender foam or some rose-cardamom garnish for a more luxurious finish. This can be done according to their preferences of that day, which might seldom be the case when they walk into cafes with set menus. This customisation becomes a canvas for GenZ, almost akin to a journal, where they can reveal their moods, flavour preferences and their aesthetic flourishes through a cuppa they have brewed for themselves.

Home Cafe As Slowing Down

Along with becoming a daily ritual amidst uncertainty, what home cafes offer GenZ is a space to slow down. Running over to a cafe to grab a coffee, only to sit in a crowded spot is passé for this generation. They are all about slowing down, about making coffee or tea and sitting down for some time during the day to just absorb everything happening around them. What makes home cafes the latest trend is then the host of social media posts and photos which revolve around this culture of taking the time out to perform the daily ritual of measuring, grinding and brewing coffee or tea that is served in a mug specifically chosen for this purpose.

Customisable Beverages

And one of the finest things about this home cafe which can at once cater to individuals as well as to intimate groups of friends or roommates is their sheer versatility. Along with simple tea and coffee concoctions, home cafes feature a host of drinks including herbal lattes, Korean-style fruit teas and even kombuchas as their baristas are always attuned to everything that is trending on social media. Sometimes, even the kind of music playing in the background can have a role to play in determining the type of drink which can be brewed to suit a particular setting.

This is a space to bring together brewing culture with a little bit of attention to self – a trend that this generation of adults is taking seriously enough, is making time for, and is deriving inspiration from.
