Thandai, a rich and aromatic Indian drink infused with nuts, spices, and saffron, is a staple during festive occasions. Traditionally prepared with full-fat milk, a paste of select dry fruits and nuts, a few spices like cardamom, sweeteners like sugar or jaggery, this drink is also topped with saffron strands, rose petals and slivers of almonds, making it a decadent, non-alcoholic beverage for festive occasions. 

Given how appropriate this beverage is for festive gatherings, over the years, many mixologists have innovated cocktails with the basic thandai recipe. So, creating thandai-inspired cocktails as well as mocktails is certainly something every host can do with ease, especially with the help of options listed below.  

Breaking Down Basic Thandai Flavours 

Thandai is known for its blend of almonds, fennel, poppy seeds, rose petals, saffron, and cardamom, creating a flavourful drink. This mix of ingredients is often made in large batches and can be stored with ease for a few days, which is why it is an easy premix to stock at home for parties.  

Traditionally, this thandai premix is mixed with milk and served chilled along with snacks, sweets and other festive treats. To understand how to use it, every host must first understand what goes into the thandai premix.

In addition to these, many also add betel leaves or paan, pistachios, ripe or raw mangoes, and occasionally, berries to craft unique thandai-inspired drinks for festive and celebratory occasions, especially during the summer months. 

Thandai-Inspired Mocktails 

For those who prefer a traditional or non-alcoholic taste in their festive drinks, these thandai-inspired mocktails may be a good option at parties. 

  1. Rose & Saffron Thandai Spritzer 

Start by pouring 125ml of thandai premix into a tall glass. Add 1 teaspoon of rose syrup and stir gently to combine. Fill the glass with ice cubes and slowly top up with 125ml of sparkling water. Give it a gentle stir to blend the flavours. For a final touch, garnish with a few saffron strands. For an elegant presentation, serve in a tall glass with a fresh rose petal as a finishing touch.

  1. Spiced Almond Thandai Cooler 

Blend 125ml of thandai premix, 60ml of coconut milk, and ¼ teaspoon of cinnamon powder with a generous amount of crushed ice until smooth. Pour the mixture into a chilled coupe glass and finish with a light dusting of nutmeg powder for an aromatic touch. Serve immediately and enjoy this rich, spiced delight!

Thandai-Inspired Cocktails 

For those guests who are always looking for inspired cocktails to add to well-curated festive menus, these thandai-infused cocktails may be a good option.    

  1. Classic Thandai Sour 

To make this thandai-inspired take on the classic whisky sour cocktail, add 125ml of thandai premix, 30ml of single malt whisky like Talisker or Godawan, and ½ teaspoon of honey to a cocktail shaker filled with ice cubes. Shake vigorously until well chilled. Strain the mixture into a chilled rocks glass and garnish with a few delicate saffron strands for an elegant finish. Serve immediately and enjoy this smooth, spiced cocktail.

  1. Spiced Rum Thandai Punch 

To prepare a Spiced Rum Thandai Punch, add 125ml of thandai premix, 30ml of good quality dark rum like Captain Morgan, ½ teaspoon of freshly grated nutmeg, and 1 tablespoon of fresh orange juice to a cocktail shaker filled with ice cubes. Shake well until thoroughly chilled. Strain into a chilled tumbler and serve immediately. For an aromatic touch, use a cinnamon stick as a stirrer.

Thandai’s rich texture and creamy flavours make for a versatile base for mocktails as well as cocktails—making it a great choice for festive occasions. Once you make or source a good quality thandai premix, it is easy enough for any host to mix up a variety of traditional and inspired drinks with it. Hosts with a bit of creativity and flair can also experiment with colourful glasses, flavour-packed garnishes, spiced or sweetened rims and interesting place settings to elevate their cocktail stations where these thandai-inspired drinks are served.
