Introduction

Hosting a cocktail party at home can be an elegant and sophisticated affair, especially when you can impress your guests with well-crafted drinks. When it comes to adding an element of luxury to your drinks menu, single malt whisky is a great choice. The smooth, rich and complex flavours of a top-quality single malt can make it an ideal base for a variety of cocktails, transforming a regular beverage into a unique concoction.

Whether you are a new whisky appreciator or an experienced connoisseur, choosing the right kind of single malt whisky is imperative. Single malt whisky has a diverse flavour range, offering fruit, floral, smokey, honey, oaky and nutty notes. It depends on the production region, distillation process and aging in casks. Single malts typically aged in oak casks, that are usually pre-sherry casks or pre-bourbon barrels. Always keep in mind that the flavour notes of the whisky affects the overall taste of the cocktail.

  1. 25th Hour Cocktail

This elegant drink requires a smoky single malt, along with a late-bottled vintage port wine, grappa-based amaro, maraschino liqueur and aromatic bitters. The late-bottled vintage port wine is nicely balanced between a ruby and tawny port wine, adding a toasty, rich flavour. To make this cocktail for 1, you need 10 ml single malt whisky, 8 ml LBV port wine, 6 ml amaro, 4 ml maraschino liqueur, 2 ml bitters, and a lemon twist. To an ice-filled mixing glass, add the whisky, port wine, amaro, maraschino liqueur and bitters. Stir well, until properly chilled. Strain into a chilled coupe glass. Express the oils from the lemon twist and serve the drink.
