One of the more sought after fruits during summer for its creamy taste and mellowy texture is muskmelon. This tropical summertime fruit has a mild, soft appearance and a distinctly sweet taste and smell which makes it a potent flavour addition to mixes prepared during warm weather.

However, there are a number of different muskmelon variations to choose from for making different cocktails. And knowing more about these fruity varieties gives a budding mixologist a glimpse into their tasting notes and how they would pair with assorted spirits and mixers.

Here are some of the more popular muskmelon varieties that can be used to blend drinks during summer weather, harvested from farms to be brought into a cocktail shaker:

Several cantaloupe melons with rough, netted skins are piled closely together.

Cantaloupe

A very popular muskmelon variety used in fruit salads as well as for blending drinks, cantaloupe has a creamy interior and a slightly floral and sweet quality. It also has a soft texture which makes it easy to turn a cantaloupe into juices and smoothies that can be added to various cocktails and mocktails.

Hami Melon

One of the muskmelon varieties that is quite popular in Chinese preparations, hami melon is very sweet, crisp and rather fresh when ripe. It can be crafted into a juice used as a mixer in highballs and light cocktails made using gin or vodka as their base.

Honeydew Melon

A more well-known muskmelon variety, honeydew is known for its mildly sweet and musky note as well as its light finish such that despite its sweetness, it hardly ever becomes overpowering. This is an excellent garnish on top of finished highballs and spritzers for introducing its subtle flavours into cocktails.

Kharbuja

The Indian muskmelon or kharbuja is found widely in summers at the fruit vendor’s. Kharbuja is mildly musky, distinctly sweet and slightly earthy in its flavour composition. It can be used to prepare a number of different cooler-style cocktails made with a vodka base and complete with spicy, jaljeera-like notes.

And when one has become familiarised with the different kinds of muskmelons that are used to prepare drinks in summers, the next step would be to choose the right muskmelon variation for preparing these blends.

Read on below for some notes on how to choose the right kind of muskmelon for blending summertime drinks:

Choose Fresh Fruits

One of the most crucial tips involved in picking out the right muskmelon variation is to choose fresh fruits. Check for fragrance first, because ripe muskmelons smell sweet at the edges and have a gentle base without actually being mushy. They also have a very well-formed skin which is a marker of fuller, developed flavours.

Pick Spirit Base

The next step is to choose the right kind of spirit base for drink preparations. This means, if one is preparing a fizzy drink using 30 ml Tanqueray No. 10 Gin or any other premium gin of choice, a cantaloupe or hami melon might be a fresh variety to choose as they can be juiced and added as a mixer topped off with sparkling water to craft a sweet, bubbly mix.

On the other hand, while making a smoky and caramelised whisky-forward cocktail using 30 ml Johnnie Walker Gold Label or any other premium whisky of choice, the mild honeydew melon would be enough to introduce subtle tropical flavours into the blend.

Check For Sweetness

Yet another way of determining which muskmelon to use in drinks is to look at the sweetness levels required in cocktails. Preparing highballs and spritzers means they can be slightly sweeter so cantaloupes, honeydew and the kharbuja can be go-to alternatives as they contain such pronounced sweet notes conducive to mixing aromatic, honeyed blends.

Go For Creamy Variations

And one of the finest ways to opt for the right muskmelon variation is to almost always go with a melon that is creamy. This will introduce rich and dense notes into cocktails such that they acquire a luxurious finish that compliments certain tropical, summertime drinks.
