Gin and tonic is a classic cocktail that can be prepared by adding 30 ml of the spirit to a tall glass which is then topped off with tonic water. A slice of lemon or a rosemary sprig is often used as a garnish while preparing G&T such that the flavours of these adornments are in tune with the botanical notes in the gin.

Gin and tonic is typically had as a pre-dinner drink or as an evening drink at a cocktail party. And oftentimes, different kinds of gin including a London dry or a floral gin are used to prepare the cocktail depending on one’s flavour preferences.

It is only evident then that every different variety of gin has to be paired with a suitable kind of tonic water to ensure the making of a well-balanced cocktail. Combining gin and tonic for cocktails then involves an understanding of the different botanical elements and tasting notes in the spirit and the different flavours of tonic water which will suit such a spirit best. This means the tonic water has to be flavourful enough to build on the tasting notes of the gin without being so overpowering that the herbaceous quality of the drink goes unnoticed.

Read on to know more about how you can bring about gin and tonic pairings for crafting a well-balanced cocktail:

London Dry And Neutral Tonic

As its name suggests, this type of gin makes for a very dry spirit, and is a drink which contains robust herbaceous notes of juniper and other botanicals used to concoct the alcohol. Complete with citrusy and spicy notes, what such a gin requires is tonic water which will allow all its flavours to come through.

So, while mixing London dry with tonic water, use neutral tonic so that its carbonation alone adds a textural layer to the cocktail while its light sweetness compliments the overall flavour profile of a potent, herby gin.

The crisp fizz of the tonic water will be enough to bring forth the flavour notes in the spirit.

Citrus Gin And Spicy Tonic

A tonic that carries notes of ginger or lemony flavours is ideal for a gin that contains citrusy notes. The sharp flavours of ginger go well with the slightly tangy and sweet elements in citrus-forward gins to make for a drink which has complex tasting notes.

Spicy or citrus tonic water like ginger or bitter lemon can be used to build the flavours of the gin in a cocktail glass without one flavour overpowering the other.

Rather, the taste of the mixer and that of the spirit will go hand in hand to craft a well-balanced drink with a simple and elegant flavour profile.

Spiced Gin And Bitter Tonic

One of the more robust G&T pairings is that of a slightly spicy gin with tonic water which contains more bitter tasting notes. The spicy spirit and the quinine tonic water is a complementary pairing such that the notes of the bitter mixer only manage to spotlight the potent flavours of the spirit.

Such a cocktail can be served with a lime wedge garnish to undercut some of its more intense flavours.

Floral Gin And Light Tonic

Another way to bring about an effective gin and tonic pairing is to use light tonic water with gin that contains floral elements. Many times, organic gin contains notes of elderflower or lavender which give the drink a tasting note that stands out for its floral flavour.

This gin can be topped off with a light tonic that has a greater amount of sweeter notes and a lower amount of quinine or bitter flavours.

The tonic water will compliment the floral quality of the gin and build into its mild and aromatic characteristics to make a delicate and sophisticated cocktail.

Herbaceous Gin And Carbonated Tonic Water

While tonic water by its very nature is meant to be carbonated fizz, when pairing it with herbaceous gin, it can be interesting to go for a mixer which has a substantial amount of bubbles.

The herby and botanical notes in the alcohol mix with the tonic water in such a way that the flavours of the drink are brought out in a more pronounced manner.
